In this picture is a student who is still learning to sail a boat and is trying to control the boat using the tiller for the first time. These students are from a group called the McKay, which is a summer school in East Boston. A different group of students would come every day from the McKay, each group being of a different grade. I was able to get to know these kids over the few weeks that I sailed with them and I could tell that each of these kids had loved coming to sailing during the week.
I am enjoying the view of the Islands that I can see from Long Island in this picture. This was my first year as an instructor. This year, I was mainly with Camp Harbor View teaching students how to sail. My experience as an instructor was amazing. I loved every moment of it. I loved teaching the students sailing and I definitely loved seeing the students easily doing what I would teach them.
As future leaders, we get to experience many aspects of Piers Park Sailing Center. We get to sail on different types of boats like Sonars, 420s, and Mercury sailboats. And, we spend time with all the different programs working with Piers Park, like Science of Sailing and Harbor Explorers. Being a future leader helps prepare us to become instructors at Piers Park Sailing Center.
While out sailing on a beautiful day, we were able to let the Harbor Explorers sit on the bow of the boat and enjoy getting their feet splashed, featured here.
