Piers Park Teaches Sailing to Local Veterans & Scholarships Offered!
August 16th was special day here at Piers Park this summer. PPSC hosted 23 enthusiastic Veterans representing the wars of Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. All 23 servicemen and women had disabling conditions and were healthcare clients of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brockton and West Roxbury. In the morning, participants were greeted by our passionate PPSC skippers and taken out for introduction to sailing lessons aboard our fleet of Sonars.
Back on land at lunch, PPSC was able to announce the great news that thanks to the efforts of Janney Montgomery Scott, Middlesex Community College and the Homebase program, PPSC will be offering 10 scholarships for Veterans to get a full lesson and membership package!! The supporting funds were raised at a Fourth of July event hosted by Janney Montgomery Scott at 60 State St overlooking the Harborfest Fireworks.
In the afternoon, more activities continued…the vets were able to go racing, be taught by US Bronze Medalist John Ruf on a 2.4m sailboat (see photo) or try out our fun remote control sailboats.
A great day was had by all and many thanks to our donors for making scholarships possible for us to continue our mission to make these vets into PPSC sailors!!!
