This is my favorite picture from the summer, because it was with a group of kids that we had all spent a lot of time with on our first session ever at Camp Harbor View. The photo was taken following our session 1 island trip to Spectacle Island.
I got hired as a youth instructor in the summer of 2015. I was a shy and nervous 16-year-old kid who had just been given the responsibility of teaching a group of kids how to sail. Working at Piers Park has taught me so much about responsibility and how to be a leader.
Working at Piers Park has taught me so much about responsibility and how to be a leader.
Beyond just sailing, I try to teach the youth more about what Piers Park has taught me, which is Leadership. Being a leader is something that has always been important to me. So when I am talking to a student, Future Leader or instructor, I am always trying to instill leadership into my lessons.
As the Camp Harbor View Sailing Director, I have had the opportunity to meet and talk to kids from different parts of the city. A lot of these kids are going on their first boat ride ever on the first day of camp going to Long Island. Their second ever boat ride is on a sailboat with us. It’s truly a special feeling when a kid tells me that this is the first time that they are going on a sailboat. You can see the excitement in their eyes when I am dropping them off on their boats. Afterwards, when I pick up the kids up, they won’t stop talking about how fun sailing was and how they can’t wait to do it again.
Some of my favorite parts of the program are the relationships built among the staff. Throughout my years at Piers Park, I have become more and more comfortable with the staff and have made life-long friendships.
I am currently going into my junior year at Suffolk University as a Biology major. In addition to working at Piers Park, I work at Mass. General Hospital as a Patient Care Associate. When I graduate from Suffolk, I plan on applying to Physician Assistant school.
