Teaching Little Sailors

By | A Sailor's Perspective

My picture shows two other Piers Park instructors and a future leader exploring Long Island with me. Piers Park partnered with Camp Harbor View, so a couple of Piers Park instructors got to go to Long Island to teach the kids there how to sail. Camp Harbor View is very different from Piers Park, so being there teaches you other ways to teach kids, entertain them and just how they truly think. Before lunch, we (the instructors) have time to relax and hang out with each other. A few instructors and I decided that it would be cool to go and look around Long Island. We came upon a lighthouse and further down the trail we encountered an abandoned asylum. We went over to it and looked inside some of the rooms. It was an amazing and fun experience

Building Confidence

By | A Sailor's Perspective

This photo was taken during one of the Harbor Explorer lessons. This lesson was actually a competition where the campers built their own boat and competed against other campers’ boats to see whose held the most marbles. Everyone did great and the kids learned that there is no one specific way to solve a problem.

The Value of Teamwork

By | A Sailor's Perspective

As a Future Leader at Piers Park Sailing Center, we participate in exciting events every week. This picture shows me and the other Future Leaders on a whale watch. I feel being at the whale watch was a team building exercise. As a FL, I am learning sailing skills and technique, I also get to teach skills to the kids learning to sail. As the students are out sailing, they also learn about working as a team and I love to help them see and understand the importance of teamwork.

The Journey

By | A Sailor's Perspective

I have been an instructor for 2 years now. My time at Piers Park, however, started 9 years ago as a Harbor Explorer. Through my years here, Piers Park has both shaped who I am and who I hope to be. This picture, in my mind, shows part of the journey that made me who I am. All of my time here has allowed me to have experiences that otherwise I would not have been able to have, or even thought to have attempted to have. Those experiences are the ones that I want to pass onto the students that I teach.

Relaxing on the Water

By | A Sailor's Perspective

Piers Park for me has not just been a job, but a part of my life. I stared as a student back when I was only ten, and now I’m eighteen. That’s eight whole years at Piers Park. I rose through the ranks from a future leader to senior instructor. Every year had its own unique challenges, but with great reward. Some kids could give you a hard time and some were perfect. Sailing brings out the best of a child, no matter how bad of day. I’m so happy to be an instructor at Piers Park, and to give back to the community.
