As a Future Leader at Piers Park Sailing Center, we participate in exciting events every week. This picture shows me and the other Future Leaders on a whale watch. I feel being at the whale watch was a team building exercise. As a FL, I am learning sailing skills and technique, I also get to teach skills to the kids learning to sail. As the students are out sailing, they also learn about working as a team and I love to help them see and understand the importance of teamwork.
When I have an opportunity to lead, I try to express the importance of good sportsmanship, teamwork, and to enjoy time on the water. When sailing, good sportsmanship is a very important value for kids to learn because making good decisions will be important on the water and off. Whether you are on a boat or doing anything in life, teamwork will always be valued. When sailing, teamwork is very important whether tacking, anchoring, or pretty much everything else on a sailboat, it’s always better with a team. I also try to teach the kids to enjoy their time sailing, because sailing can be extremely fun with Piers Park Sailing.
I feel sailing brings great joy to most people and a lot to the students. Throughout the day, the kids are always smiling, laughing, and learning. Partially being a student, I am also smiling, laughing, and learning at Piers Park. The students are always willing to learn and they always embrace the fact that they have a chance to sail.
My favorite part of Piers Park Sailing Center would be that I get to participate in FL Fridays. I love this part of the program because each Friday I get to experience a new part or the Piers Park program. I get to not only go on the Friday Island trips, but I also get to share time with the Harbor Explorers and Camp Harbor view programs, as well as other events.
For me, school and sailing goals are very similar. At school three of my main goals are to: 1) achieve great grades, 2) get along with other students, and 3) learn at my best ability. At Piers Park, my three main goals are to: 1) achieve good performance evaluations, 2) to get along with the entire staff and students at Piers Park, and 3) learn what I am taught to the best of my ability.
This 2019 season at Piers Park I have learned a lot, while having fun at the same time, and shared new experiences with myself and others.
